San Jose Suspect Hits Landlord With Truck Before Police Standoff

BVNA

A newly surfaced home-security video shows in vivid detail the moment when a man arguing with his landlord got into his pickup truck and rammed a fence, injuring the landlord and touching off a lengthy police standoff last week.

In the video, provided to this news organization by a neighbor of the victim, the white pickup truck allegedly driven by suspect Stephen Maciel can be seen maneuvering to enter a driveway on South Willard Street in West San Jose around 12:20 p.m. Friday.

Once in the driveway, the truck stops momentarily, then suddenly accelerates into and destroys a wooden fence. San Jose police Lt. Mike Sullivan said the victim was on the other side of the fence when the collision occurred, and that he was knocked back and suffered “a severe leg injury.”

At some point during the encounter, shots were fired, which summoned police officers to the scene. Sullivan has said that the source of the gunfire remains under investigation.
