An affordable housing group wants to build a transitional housing complex with single-occupancy rooms near San Carlos Street for short-term tenants who need help getting established.

Core Affordable Housing has filed a planned development request to build 123 single-room occupancy units on 1.31 acres at 270 Sunol St. Sunol Court, as it is called, would be sandwiched between Pizza Jack’s on the corner of W. San Carlos St. and Foundry Community Day School at 258 Sunol.

Dixie Baus, director of CORE Affordable Housing, says the units will range from 270 to 290 square feet and are designed for one person, not for families. Baus described the project as first-step housing. It could be for someone working across the street at the Safeway or someone working in that neighborhood or it could be a part-time college student.
